I recently had a call when I was working on my home PC. The caller was female with a thick Indian accent. The very first thing she asked me "are u the owner of the computer." I obviously confirmed that I was and then she proceeded to inform me that I was using a Windows 7 operating system that had become infected with malware. I challanged this as I use anti virus and malware software (an extremely good on)! But she said that he technical reports indicated that my computer was infected. She introduced her company and then asked me to check the management system of the computer. Obviously errors showed up, that is not uncommon. But I humoured her. She then said that she was going to hand the phone over to her technical manager who would help me to fix the problem. A male then took the phone with an even heavier set Indian accent and he asked me things like is my computer performing slower at startup and numerous other commonly mistaken aspects that are not unique. Obviously my answer was yes once again. He then requested that I press ctrl+r. At this point I asked him to verify that he was a Microsoft technicial and he replied that he was not and that he was merely providing support to fix my problem. I then asked him what he wanted me to do and what the implications were. He said he had to access my computer in order to fix the problems. I, at this point, told him that I would not allow him access to my computer and that I prefered to contact Mircosoft directly regarding this matter. He became insistent and I once again refused to grant him access at which he began to tell me that once the call was over then assistence from them would no longer be available as they were monitoring 1000's of systems with the same problems. I told him that I would take my chances and prefered to contact Microsoft myself. I then hung up!

I later learned by doing a Google search that it is a clever form of computer fraud. What was the most disturbing was that they called me on my home landline and knew what operating system I was using. I live in South Africa and this unsettling because most South Africans will be taken by a scam like this at a huge cost to themselves.

Your site has provided me with the opportunity to let others know that there is a real threat and danger on the net and it comes right into their homes. And believe you me, it is a lot closer to each of us than we would care to believe.

For the person seeking open source software that can accomplish the equivalent tasks as the 'paid' for versions, I suggest looking on the 'Kim Komando' website @ http://www.komando.com/ under her 'download' button. The list includes security, utilities, office & operating system software. Also, the information she publishes in her newsletters has been very helpful to me in my ventures to help friends and coworkers unwind their broken computers.
